Experience Host Kelty shares her top destinations to enjoy the great outdoors around the Austin area.

  1. Butler Park- This park is great for families with children. You can enjoy the alliance playground, splash pad to beat the heat, and take in the views of the skyline. What I like most about this spot is that it’s historic, playing a part in building Austin. The added bonus to this spot is that it’s central to many Austin attractions like Terry Black’s or the margs on the rooftop patio of El Alma.
  2. Turkey Creek Trail – This trail is tucked inside the picturesque Emma Long park. Enjoy roughly 3 miles of shady trail and don’t forget to bring your pup because this trail is off-leash. When we get a little rain, you can enjoy the many creeks that flow throughout the trails.
  3. West Cave Outdoor Discovery Center- About 45 min west of Austin in the Texas Hill country, this is a true hidden gem that will make you feel like you are in another world. The 76 acres preserve features the region’s distinct canyons and stunning water resources. They offer guided tours, meditative hikes, and other seasonal activities. Reservations recommended for entry.
  4. Barton Creek Greenbelt- The best way to get out of the city without leaving the city. The Barton Springs access point is my favorite because you can go for a hike down the trail and enjoy a bit of the serenity of nature before turning back and cooling off at Barton Springs pool (located at the trailhead). Maybe even get some birdwatching, as the area is known for many sheltering migratory birds. This is also a great spot for rock climbers on the large limestone walls.
  5. Laguna Gloria Sculpture Walk- Maybe not your traditional outdoor activity, but for a small fee, enjoy beautiful art against the back drop the rich greenery in the hills of West Austin. Perfect for a more lazy outdoor picnic/or date type day. Bonus: Go visit the peacocks nextdoor at Mayfield Park.
